Job Description

 

The travel industry is one of the top 10 transaction processors among banks and social networks. A typical traveler generates at least twice as much data as a savvy internet user.

With travel industry being highly complex and data-driven, this role identifies and solves interesting puzzles which leads to innovative products or directly benefits the financials of the company.

 

Under minimal or no direction this role is responsible for innovation in the travel space. The successful candidate will be able to identify and prioritize potential ideas, communicate them effectively, gather input from industry experts, and look at the ideas from the point of view of different types of travel industry players (i.e. travel suppliers, travel agents, travel management companies, corporations and travelers alike). This role is also responsible for helping immediate team or internal customers in various business decisions for products and services by using the available data.

  • Creativity in using available tools and out-of-the-box thinking to provide the best solution to problems
  • Ability to rapidly prototype and evaluate innovative travel products and applications
  • Persistence and willingness to learn and apply new techniques/new tools constantly
  • Experience working with very large datasets which happen to be residing in different data stores in different formats

 

Responsibilities:

  • The Principal Operations Research Analyst conducts analysis and develops advanced models for travel agency and suppliers. The position also consults with and provides guidance to many departments and senior management on advanced technical issues.
  • Own the prototype solution end-to-end
  • Understand the underlying business problem, extract and manipulate needed data, and design and test optimization models
  • Conduct analyses and develop models for travel agency and airline decision planning
  • Conducts logical analyses of complex to highly complex management problems, management information requirements and formulates mathematical models of problems for solution by computer
  •  
  • Prepares mathematical models of problem areas in one or several equations that relate constants and variables, restrictions alternatives, conflicting objectives and their numerical parameters
  • Prepares written, non-technical reports for management, indicating solution or range of possible alternatives in rank of desirability and probability of success
  • Research and validate new/improved methods of forecasting, optimization and overbooking.
  • Strengthens leadership position in merchandising and retailing
  • Collaborate with other teams efficiently and seamlessly
  • Potentially lead and mentor an intern or another junior member in the team

Job Requirements

 

Key technical qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in Stochastic Optimization and Revenue Management
  • Experience with optimization modeling (linear programming, dynamic programming, nonlinear optimization)
  • Strong programming skills in one or more of the following: C++, R, Python, Scala or Java.
  • Experience with large-scale data analysis and statistical modeling
  • Familiarity with open source Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence libraries such as Spark MLlib, H2o.ai, TensorFlow, etc.
  • Familiarity with Hadoop ecosystem.
  • Good knowledge on Data Warehouses, RDBMS and MPP database skills – ability to query data using SQL.
  • Working knowledge in large-scale/distributed SQL, Hadoop, NoSQL, HBase, Columnar databases

 

Other qualifications:

  • Strong ability to drive a project from the beginning to the end
  • Strong process and technical documentation skills
  • Strong communications skills with different levels in the organization as well as a business acumen to understand various types of business problems
  • Experience working with teams who have highly analytical skills
  • Strong desire to learn new technologies and try implementing them
  • Prior leadership and/or mentorship experience will be valuable

 

 

Qualifications

  • MSc with at least 3 years of industry experience or PhD in a highly-technical field, such as Operations Research, Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Science.
