Job Description

 

PRINCIPAL OPERATIONS RESEARCH ENGINEER

 

Airline industry employs very complex planning and operations processes. Airlines operate on very thin margins and require multiple resources such as schedule, crew, maintenance and airport equipment to be optimally managed, so that profitability is maximized all safety and operational regulations are satisfied. To achieve these objectives airlines employ sophisticated operations research techniques leveraging powerful computational capabilities of modern hardware.
The Operations Research Engineer applies expert level simulation and optimization methodologies to solve strategic and operational problems in airline industry. As a key member of the Sabre Operations Research team, you will leverage your operations research and business expertise to translate business questions into mathematical models, develop algorithms to solve them, define suitable KPIs, and present results to a wide range of audiences including internal and external clients, sales, and development team. In addition, you will engineer optimization software in C++, Java or Python, leverage commercial solvers like CPLEX or Gurobi and work on its continuous performance improvement and business enhancements. You will also utilize your strong communication skills to work with developers to support product development cycles.

 

Responsibilities

 

•    Work with subject matter experts from airlines to identify opportunities for leveraging simulation and optimization algorithms to improve decision support.
•    Develop custom optimization algorithms and run proof of concept studies.
•    Leverage existing optimization and simulation tools to enhance in-house algorithms.
•    Collaborate with software engineers to implement and test production quality code for simulation and optimization models.
•    Develop processes and tools to monitor optimization models’ performance.
•    Demonstrate software to customers and perform value proving benchmarks. Calibrate software for customer needs and train customer for using and maintaining software.
•    Resolve customer complaints with software and respond to suggestions for improvements and enhancements.

Job Requirements

 

Required Qualifications

 

•    Advanced Degree in Operations Research, Computer Science, Mathematics or related Quantitative disciplines.
•    Proven ability to apply modeling and analytical skills to real-world problems.
•    Proficiency in optimization solvers (CPLEX, Gurobi) for LP/IP 
•    Proficiency with solving large-scale optimization using decomposition algorithms and other advanced OR techniques for linear and non-linear optimization
•    Advanced knowledge of C++, Java and Python and associated development tools.
•    Software development experience with proven record of developing complex algorithm.

 

Desirable Qualifications

 

•    Familiarity with airline, rail or supply-chain industries and decision support systems employed there.
•    Experience developing network optimization, resource planning and task scheduling models.
•    Understanding of airline scheduling, crew planning, airport operations and disruption management concepts.
